Meetings

Let’s see, to recap this week so far before I head out to work. First off, the NaNoWriMo meeting Sunday went pretty well. There were two people there besides me and Ian, and rather than follow the itinerary that I had made, Ian and I instead fielded questions to try and get the two other people there acquainted with what NaNo is and how it works. It would have been nice had there been more people attend, but there were a lot of people I had spoken to about NaNo and most of them expressed an interest in doing it but didn’t have the time to attend the meetings. There might be more people this up-coming Saturday for the full-fledged write-in.

Last night’s crochet class was fun yet again. There were two new girls about ten or eleven who came to learn to crochet. It’s interesting to see the tons of different projects going on. One girl has been making hats like crazy, another has recently taken to making cookies using a pattern of mine. There’s another girl who hasn’t quite made it past the point of making chains (the foundation for crocheting anything), so she made spaghetti noodles. 🙂 The adults are always making a variety of things. Last night there was a stocking, an angel tree-topper, and a hackysack among other projects. I don’t tend to get anything crocheted myself during meetings because I’m always running around answering questions and getting project sheets distributed. Next week: toy turkeys for the Thanksgiving table.

I’m doing pretty decent on NaNo so far. I’m ahead of where I should be at this point. The NaNo idea is to write about 1,667 words a day and you’ll hit 50,000 by the end. Today’s target goal is 6,666 (Rook, you’ll like that number), and I’ve already gotten over 9k. I haven’t had much opportunity to write since Sunday, however. Monday I was at work all day then had to come home and work on crochet projects for the class yesterday. Yesterday I was at work all day then came home to get all my crochet stuff together for crochet class yesterday evening. By the time I got home, my brain was a little more fried than usual. I figure that I can get a decent amount of work in tonight, and I have tomorrow off completely, so I’ll have all of Thursday to write like mad. And I need to start writing like mad. Ian’s ahead of me by several thousand words! That won’t last long once I get a solid chunk of time to work though. 😉 I’m not worried about hitting the 50k mark barring some unforeseen disaster like getting mono or something, but it’s still fun to have that as a goal. Last year, I broke 100,000 before the end of the month was up, and the novel wasn’t even done yet. (It has since been completed and sits at 146,911 words, pre-edited.) Come to think of it, I wonder how many words my first book was. I’ll go look. 144,020. That’s…that’s a lot closer to the same size than I thought. I thought Book Three had dragged on a lot longer. I guess I was mistaken, lol. At any rate, I think I’ll try and type up some more of the prologue for Book Four before work just to get a couple hundred more words in. I’ll keep you posted!

    Counting:

Can you set your computer to count words for you or do you have to do it the old fashioned way?

    Hooray for word count!:

Anymore, most word processors have a word count function or a document properties feature where you can see how many words are in a document. The thing is that not all word processors count the same way, so sometimes it's off by a couple hundred or even up to a thousand depending on the program being used. I use Open Office, so that's what my word counts are based off of, though come the end of November, the NaNoWriMo site might say it's fewer.
