An icy and snowy day

Well, it’s not even 6:30 in the morning right now, and I’ve been called to be informed that the Jasper Public Libraray will not be open today due to inclement weather. Rather, Elaine told me that we’re not opening because one of our administrators, who always gets there incredibly early, spent fifteen minutes just opening the door. That probably means another half hour to get the two front doors open, and well, that’s just crazy. Two days ago we got about two inches of snow that was then promptly slicked over with a thin layer of ice. Yesterday, it sleeted the entire day, rather heavily, in fact. I scraped the van off while Ian got ready for work and took off quite a bit of ice that he then had to re-scrape only a few hours later to come home. Since I was awoken and always have to go to the bathroom when I first wake up in the morning, I got up and was wandering around and decided to look out the window. Now it’s snowing, and there’s a good four inches of snow on the top of the minivan. Big, fat, heavy flakes too. At least it’s not more ice. There’s about a quarter inch of ice covering damn near every surface out there.

Well, it’s about an hour since I started this post. While I was typing, I heard Ian’s cell phone going off because someone was texting him. To make sure he was getting the texts, I wandered in to see him texting whoever it was back. It was his boss, telling him that he’d have to open because the person who was supposed to open lives on a backroad and all of those are closed in a state of emergency. The joys of living in town, I suppose. So we went out and started scraping the van off. She has an awesome rear-window defroster, so we didn’t have to worry about that. The ice eventually started to come off the windshield, so we fought with the side windows where the remnants of yesterday’s ice storm had completely covered them again. There was a lot more ice out there than I thought, having previously only just looked out the window. We were both covered in snow by the time we came back in because it’s snowing so hard out there. Looking back out the window, I can see that the van is once again covered in snow despite the fact that we were only just out there half an hour ago. At least snow can just be swept off. I really can’t believe he’s going in to work today. Yesterday, they had six transactions, if I remember what Ian said correctly. That’s just nuts. I wonder if he’ll have trouble getting the store’s door open.

I grabbed the camera just like I did last year after the ice storm, and I took as many pictures as I could before it started whining that the battery was dying. I think I’ll replace the batteries and try going back out again later when the sun’s up so I won’t have to contend with the flash ruining half the pictures. It is hard to take pictures in thickly falling snow though. I’ll try to get around to editing them and finding last year’s so I can see how much difference there is between them.

On a random note, the cat’s hyper. Kitty isn’t used to us being up so early (that makes three of us), and so it has messed up her little Kitty schedule. She was pretty freaked out that we were going in and out so much and that we were dragging in mysterious white stuff that turned to cold water in puddles on the floor. Briefly, she desperately wanted outside, but then she didn’t even set paw one out the door before thinking better of it, turning tail and running into the den far away from the invisible Cold Monster outside. So instead she came into the living room and attacked her crocheted toys for a few minutes. I guess it made her feel all powerful or got the gremlins out of her system because she’s calming down and sitting next to me, still bright-eyed and jumpy though. Crazy cat.

So there’s this mornin in the Doyle house. I think I’m gonna hop onto WoW and try doing a few quests before the servers get bogged down and my machine grinds to a halt. If I think about it, I’ll try getting those pictures uploaded. I’m hoping the ones of the holly tree turn out OK. They might make a nice desktop. Everyone drive safely if you have to drive. Otherwise try to stay home and drink hot tea. I’m up to letter I right now, drinking my loose leaf teas in alphabetical order. I’m lame, I know. But I’m inside and warm, so who cares? Stay safe!

    We are staying home:

We didn't get the ice (my mother-in-law in Cincy did), just 10 INCHES of snow. My arms have fallen off from shoveling the driveway clear. (Which makes it fun to type, hehe)

I've been outside quite a bit today:

When Ian got the van stuck on the hill at the first stop sign, he called me and I got dressed and trudged all the way up there only to see him pulling away when I was halfway up the hill. Then he called me again to tell me he was stuck again behind an idiot in a truck. I reached the top of the hill as he turned around, and he stopped at the side of the road where I talked to him before he went on his way trying to find a decent road. I trudged back to the house and got all the snow-covered things off and was reading an article on cat food allergies when Ian came home covered in snow because he had left the van somewhere.

I went out again when he left to get the van unstuck and took some more pictures, waiting with my cell in case he called. So far today, I've gone through two pairs of pants and three pairs of socks, all lying around somewhere to dry. At least the sun's out, I guess. Of course, everthing it's melting right now will just freeze up again when it's gone–stupid sun.

    Snow:

Yeah I had to dig out a spot on Ohio Street for Jamie to park in. It's been pretty miserable up here also.
