"If you think education is expensive, try ignorance." -Derek Bok
My meeting with Terry McCammon over at SMWC went well Tuesday. I asked my random questions such as "Who do I call if I get sick one day?" or "Where's the bathroom?" We went to HR, and he showed me the French classroom. They have one room where all the French classes are taught. How cool is that? He was talking about how much he wished I were also available to teach the French 211 class because the person they settled on hasn't had French in a while. I got a parking permit that reads "Faculty/Staff." Pretty sweet. He even mentioned how a whole-year permit would probably be fine 'cause they're most likely going to want to hire me back in the spring!! Kickass!
I got the textbook, something that I'd expect on a coffee table or on the back of the toilet rather than in a classroom, but I think I'll be able to work it into the syllabus. It is definitely oriented towards the business-minded person since it covers quite a bit about management styles and how to deal with international business. Like I have any idea how business works. I'm a friggin' linguist: I tell people what the words in their ads mean and the underlying metaphorical/morphological/semantical/philological crap that makes eyes glaze over when I open my mouth. See? I've probably just done it to you too. But at least I know the history of France and her literary/artistic/architectural movements like the back of my hand. Currently my left hand has quite a notch taken out of it due to a pair of Fiskars scissors and bad aim on my part. Regardless. I yammer.
So I'm still insanely excited and the first couple lesson plans are shaping up quite nicely. I ran to LGT to grab some more books and materials, and I'll probably go through some of those soon too. For right now, I'm tired from the drive to the parents' yesterday, staying up late talking to Dad and then the drive back up, so I'm going to take a nap. Yay me! I won't be able to do this at all in a week, after all. I'll be way too busy for napping–even normal sleeping is going to be put in question. Oh well, until later.
