Library tidbits

There are a few random things from work on Friday that I meant to post but didn’t get around to because I spent Friday night and Saturday morning cleaning up my craft stuff in the living room for the Lushbaughs to have places to sit while they were down Saturday and Sunday, and then Sunday night I went on a writing spree. Now that I’m seated and not helping Rook with his homework (Ian’s in the den helping him with calculus now), I thought I might post the two things that I found to be interesting.

The first isn’t so much interesting to anyone else but me, but I found it funny. (That being said, I find the joke “What’s brown and sticky?” [“A stick!”] to be hilarious, so my sense of humor is surely off.) I was putting books away in the cookbooks section of the library when I noticed a book out of place (actually, that happens a lot and is nothing new). The funny thing was that this book was on toilet repair. So I’m standing there in the cookbook section holding a book on toilet repair thinking of the circumstances that would put those two sections together. I came up with this: “I got a new cookbook and tried a new recipe for my guests this weekend. It gave all of them food poisoning, and now my toilet won’t work!” Ahahahahaha! Too funny. I was giggling to myself as I moved the toilet repair book to its rightful spot and then went back to shelving books. I told the story to Ian who just stared at me. I thought it was hilarious.

The next interesting point is that I’m going to be teaching a crocheting class at the library starting next week! I had mentioned a while back to one of the librarians that I crochet and am teaching myself to knit (actually, I’m teaching myself to knit left-handed; I find there are just lots of things I do better with my left than my right). She was really excited and wanted to know if I could teach people how to crochet. I figured, why not? I’ve taught lots of other random things like sign language, French, how to adapt to life at college, and generalized insanity, so why not crochet? She talked to some of the other librarians about it, and one of them grabbed me on Friday and insisted we get this going. The funny thing about this is that I had just finished typing up a four-page document of notes to jot down my ideas for lessons and projects the same day that everyone pounced on me to flesh out the details. We picked a day and time, and I’ll be starting on December 4 from 6 to 7:45 in the evening. The starting project will be a scarf, and if people get it done by Christmas, it would make a fun gift. After that, I’m going to have people work on squares to practice more advanced stitches, then I’ll sew them all together to make a blanket that we can donate to one of the local charities or to Project Linus. A lot of the other librarians loved the idea of making something for charity too. I think that half of the class is going to be other librarians, lol.

Today they printed up flyers and are going to run ads in the local paper. Several librarians are putting posters up in churches or businesses near them. They’re really excited to get some adult programs going since everything they have now is for kids. Also, everyone seems really impressed with what ideas I’ve come up with so far as well as how organized I am. I already have a half dozen sample squares for people to look at, and I’ve got projects I’ve made to show some of the things they can do with crochet. I plan on teaching myself enough about knitting to be able to at least get people started on the basics by February, maybe working on another blanket together as we work out the kinks. To say the least, everyone’s excited at the library, and I think it’ll be interesting to see how to teach a crochet class (and eventually knitting class). Hooray for craftiness!

So those are my work blurbs that I meant to post earlier and didn’t get around to. Right now, I think I’m going to forego working on the novel specifically and work more generally on getting my notes typed up from the past week or two. I’ve got about fifteen pages of handwritten notes that need to be typed up eventually, and tonight seems like a decent night since we’ve got Rook over and I’ll likely be going to bed early so I can get up and kick him out of the house for school in the morning. I’m so close to 100k that I’m tempted to get back to work, but these notes aren’t going to type themselves.

    Congrats on the class!:

You can take the girl out of the school, but you can't take the teacher out of the girl! Have fun!!

Rook was picking on the stck:

I'm working on learning left-handed crchet and Tunisian crochet too. The Tunesian crochet is going fine. The left-handed not so much because I don't like using my right hand so much . . . or less. It's all very confusing. I figure the left-handed crochet will help with any left handers who show up next week. Exciting!
