Funeral day

K, well now that I’m back at the house and with my computer, I can ramble on about yesterday. Ian and I got up early (way too early for the two of us nightowls) and got dressed up before heading out to his parents’ house in LGT. We were meeting up with them because we were going to ride with them to the funeral home in Washington where Ian’s Great-aunt Irma was. She had died Monday, and her funeral was yesterday. I got to meet a lot more of Ian’s family on his dad’s side, mostly first cousins once removed and second cousins, even one incredibly adorable second cousin once removed (a cute baby with the prettiest brown eyes). I like Ian’s family; they’re really nice.

We moved from the funeral home to the church, which I couldn’t remember the name of (I don’t know that I’d ever really been around Washington’s church much, but apparently they changed the name recently so it wouldn’t have mattered if I rememebered its name anywho). There was the usual funeral mass where the priest talked about his deity more than the deceased (one of the reasons why I hate Catholic funerals so much; it’s barely about the person who died and all about a person who doesn’t exist–in my beliefs). I’d only ever met Irma once at Grandma Doyle’s 90th birthday, so I didn’t know much about her, but I’m sure the priest could have talked about her long life more (she was 89 and had had 7 kids!! I mean, there are probably lots of accomplishments in there), but still, it was nice.

Then we went to the gravesite breifly before heading to the K of C there in Washington for a luncheon. We got to catch up with Ian’s Aunt Betty, Uncle Joe and Aunt Cathy. Betty and Joe are Fred’s siblings, and Cathy is Joe’s wife. I’m slowly learning Ian’s relatives. If it’s hard to keep track of my own family because it’s huge, the same can be said for Ian’s (his dad is one of seven and his mom the youngest of nine). All in all, it was a good family reunion even if the reason for everyone getting together was pretty sad. It’s too bad Grandma couldn’t have come (her health is fading), and Sister Rita (another of Grandma’s younger sisters) had attended the wake but not the funeral, so I didn’t see her either. Lots of other family though.

After leaving Washington, we went back to the Doyles where Mom went to sleep (she works nights at the hospital and hadn’t been to bed yet) and Dad headed out to see Grandma at the nursing home then hit the K of C for a bit. Ian worked on their broken computer while I headed out to see Mom (my mom, gee, this is confusing to type up) at the library. I was picking up my copy of the LGT High School yearbook for 2007-08, but she’d left it at home, so we chitchatted on the way to the house and back. It was raining at this point, and Ian had asked me to run to CVS for canned air duster, so I ran there before heading back to the Doyles after getting back to the library with Mom. Ian played on their computer a little more then conked out on the living room floor. I crocheted. Then Dad came home and decided he was going to play with his new grill and use the rotisserie feature to roast a pork loin. He loves to experiment with his new toys, and we get to eat it! 🙂 After a while, Mom got up and Leslie and Jeff came over for dinner and we all had our usual fun time picking on each other and talking. It’s really funny that Katie called to ask about pet stuff (she’s planning on adopting two cats today) just as we were looking up pet adoption sites in the area for cats on-line (since Bo, their cat, died this year, their house has been pretty empty and Mom has been wanting another cat). Leslie and Jeff left while I was on the phone, Simon called Ian on his phone while I was on the phone, and after I got off the phone, Ian and I headed out for home ’cause it was getting late.

I talked to Simon on the way back to the house, and as soon as we got here, Kitty ran outside and refused to come back in because she’d been cooped up all day. I was tired, so I just read comics and putzed around to unwind. It was a long day, but I think it was a good day even if it started with a funeral. Unfortunately, I may be attending another funeral sooner rather than later because Grandma’s health is really declining, but she’s still holding on for now. I think she’ll hold on for a while longer, and maybe I won’t have to post again about funerals for a while.

So that was my yesterday. Today looks like it’s going to be about laundry, cleaning up the living room, and then later helping Rook out with his economics homework (he has to build a business as in use a cardboard box and create a little miniature of a business as opposed to what most companies do and hire out to a model maker, lol). After all, I have the arts and crafts stuff and the know-how, so I guess I’m the likely candidate around here to help out. I want everyone else out there to have a great day, and enjoy the rain while we’ve got it!
