I learned to crochet for two major reasons: to be able to make pillows like the one I grew up with, and to make spider toys like the ones we all used to beat each other with. I’ve made a number of pillows like the one Gramdma Ringwald made so long ago, but I had yet to make any spiders. So I sat down this week to try and figure out how to crochet a ball. Seems simple enough, but every other time I’ve started to make one using one of various patterns on-line, I would get stopped partway through and lose my place and just frog the whole thing. I decided to start with something without legs, so I made the following:

You can tell that Kitty gets a kick out of it as well.

It’s pretty rough, and I’m not overly thrilled with it as it is, but it’s a start. I’m happy to have finally finished one of these things. Maybe another pattern will prove more effective. I decided to try the spider anyway, and this is the result:

I think because Kitty had been sleeping when I showed this to her, she was less impressed with the spider. Still cute though!

I’ll probably try some more spiders and eyes soon as a break from pillowcases. I also want to make some pumpkins as well or put eyes and stuff on it for a jack-o-lantern. They’re not really all that time-consuming or difficult to make, but they do require concentration–something I tend to lack when watching the X-files. Speaking of which, I just finished another disc, and since it’s after one now, I guess I’ll be hopping off to bed where the husband has been unconscious for the past several hours. Kitty’s unconscious next to me on the couch, and I will go ahead and add to the unconsciousness in the house. Night!
