This is a shout-out to the family about my summer’s obessive crocheting. I’ve gotten it into my head that I want to make an afghan for each sibling and one for the ‘rents. It started with wanting to make a pillow or two for Sarah because I was making pillows for Jessica (which I just finished a couple days ago; I just need to get out and mail them or something). Then the pillow idea sort of got bigger and was turning into an afghan instead. To take a break from making several hundred granny squares and then sewing them all together, I went out and grabbed some more yarn and started work on another blanket just like the one I made for Eric and Michelle’s wedding (except that this isn’t 100% wool and is a different shade of green). I’d really like to make a blanket using the afghan square which makes up my favorite pillow (you all know it as “piddow,” the one Grandma Ringwald made), and I’m actually kind of itching to just go out and get some yarn so I can make a few squares for it already. But then I realized that if I’m making blankets for everyone, maybe it’d be a good idea to get some input from those receiving them.
So here’s the thing: I already have one afghan about 75% finished which is made up of granny squares in rainbow colors bordered by black. That’s blanket #1. Below is the half that’s sewn together followed by a close-up of the squares.

I’m about seven or eight inches tall into the sage green blanket which is the same pattern as the one I made for Eric and Michelle. That’s blanket #2. I’ve got a pic of part of it as well as a detail of the pattern using one of Jessica’s pillows.

There’s the afghan square idea which I was thinking of doing in greys and blues, or maybe just blues, or maybe blues and cream colors. That would be blanket #3. Below is a sample square I made out of random yarn I had lying around.

I can always make a really light-weight blanket which is more for lounging around in rather than sleeping under. It’s the netting pattern I used for my little camoflage blanket (which I adore and use all the tiem since it’s the perfect size for my lap). That would be blanket #4.

And of course there’s always other patterns and ideas out there as well which I’d be happy to make. I’m thinking that these wouldn’t be full-sized blankets but actually what I refer to has halfghans, about half the size of a regular afghan–still perfect for one person to sleep under or just to keep on a couch or chair.
I guess what info I’m looking for is this: who wants what? I’m only going to make one of the rainbow-colored granny square blanket that I’ve nearly completed simply because I’ve been working on it off and on for almost a year already, and it’s far more time-consuming to use eight colors than a few. I could make a different style granny square blanket where it’s only a couple colors, and that’d be OK. The sage green afghan is also going to someone, and I could easily make another one in the same color or a different color because it’s just back-and-forth, back-and-forth, back-and-forth. One color, no sewing squares together, and fairly light-weight. I could make the netted version even more easily–again, one color and very light-weight. That is, unless someone wanted different colors to make stripes or just to have a different color as the border. Like in Jessica’s pillows, stripes are pretty easy to make with blankets #2 and #4. I’d really like to make a blanket with afghan squares if someone wants it. There’s a lot more options with that one because each square can be a different color, so there could be a color theme or something. I’m not saying I’ll get these done any time really soon, but since I’m home all the time, I’m trying to do something other than WoW and cleaning, and I really want to make everyone something. I don’t check my e-mail all that often, but if you want to send your ideas to my gmail account or just post them here, either works for me. So, Katie, Tommy, Sarah, Simon, and Mom and Dad, lemme know!
Afgan:
#1 or #3. All of them look very nice.
Love, Dad
Tough decision:
I like the sage green one, and it would look good with the wood color of our bed. We could keep it folded at the foot of it. So that's my vote. 🙂
Cute idea!:
I figured Dad would like the first and third (since they're patterns Grandma always used), so that's going to be easy. I figured the sage one would go well with browns and tans, so it's a cute idea to have it at the foot of your bed. Thanks for letting me know! I figure Katie would like something in blue. 😉 I'll have to figure out a way of catching Tommy (I'll probably call) since I don't know how often he's around a computer anymore. He's always doing something more productive like fixing cars. 🙂 And I've talked a little with Simon. He's not much interested in a blanket, so I might just make him something else. Can you crochet swords?
Blue!:
You all know me too well.
Any pattern preference?:
Unless you (Katie) have a preference of pattern, I figure I might just make a blue one of the green one 'cause it's really cute (and pretty easy to make). I'll have to see what color Tommy would like best. I'm having so much fun crocheting, I might just make blankets for all the Doyles too!
