Well, it appears that something has been thoroughly messed up at the university, but since I’ve been there for eight years now, I’m pretty used to random stuff just getting balled up. The current incarnation of messiness has quite a background, but I don’t feel like getting into that as much as what the current issue is. I knew that since I was graduating in early August, it would be a close squeeze for them to hire me officially before the semester started, but I figured that once they did, they’d at least get me down for the correct semester!
See, the thing is that I access my class rosters and well, everything class-related through the Sycamore Portal. It was down last week from Wednesday to Friday, so I couldn’t access it to get e-mail or class rosters or anything. So this weekend when it came back up, I tried accessing the class rosters through my account, and it told me I wasn’t teaching any classes this fall. Okaaaaaay, that probably just means that they haven’t entered me in under the teacher for those classes. I’ve had the same thing happen to me with University 101, so I wasn’t overly concerned, and I got the class rosters through different means.
Then I decided to check the My Courses tab in the Portal where it’s supposed to list both what classes I’m taking (if any) and what classes I’m teaching (if any). Nothing beyond what I’ve already taken and taught had been coming up before this weekend, but I thought maybe something would go through today. Sure enough, there are five new classes listed for Spring 2007. French 101, 102, 201, 202 and University 101…for next spring. Again, nothing for this fall, and they still have me listed as teaching Univ 101 even though I’m no longer working for SASC. Great.
So guess how I’ll be spending my entire afternoon? I already planned on spending quite a bit of time on campus anyway because I have errands to run and a meeting to attend, plus dropping off the Rocky DVDs at the library and grabbing some new movies. So I figured I’d be there a while anyway, but this is just going to make it that much longer. It’s not really a big deal if they don’t fix the problem this week, so long as they get it fixed. I also wouldn’t mind getting some information about how I’m going to be paid, what benefits package I’ll have and how I can get the husband on it. Hell, any information about this job beyond the fact that I’ll be teaching four classes would be nice! I feel like I’m being treated like a grad student and not an employee. They sure as fuck better not pay me like a grad student; heads will roll. It’s going to be a long day.
