Jerry Jabbering

I heard back from the grad school yesterday about Jerry’s formatting. It wasn’t much, actually. Take the bold off on this one thing, make this one thing in italics, put little dots between the chapter number and the page number in the table of contents… Piddly stuff, really. The only thing I have to contest is the use of small caps for subheadings in each of my chapters versus just having them in lower case. LSA (my stylesheet from the journal Language) says to use small caps for subheadings, but the grad school prefers lower case. I called the editor-lady to ask which I should follow: my stylesheet or the grad school. Sometimes one takes precedence over the other, sometimes it’s the reverse. There’s really no good way of telling, so I’ll just ask her when she calls back, or I’ll call her back this afternoon. I’ve made all the piddly changes (all five of them) except for that one, and that one will take only five minutes once I hear one way or the other. After that, it’s printing it off again and dragging Jerry’s ass back to campus for another round. Making these little changes did bump Jerry up a page; he’s now sitting at 119 instead of 118. Whoohoo, I guess. I wonder how long it’ll take to print him on Hippie here at home. I’ll find out this afternoon.

On a somewhat related note, I have decided that I really like this PDF converter. One of the reasons why Jerry was converted to Word from WordPerfect is because WP’s pdf converter is broken and messes up apostrophes. I figured that if I had to get Jerry printed somewhere else, I had a better chance of them having Word than WP, so I switched it to Word, totally forgetting that even the same M$ products on different machines will fuck anything up, so I desperately wanted a pdf converter that wouldn’t fuck up the formatting. Word doesn’t have that functionality, so I went on-line to download one. I came across PrimoPDF which works great. Essentially, it works on printer protocols and creates an image of the exact document as if it were going to print it. That’s how I took Jerry to OfficeMax to get him printed off Monday, and that’s how I’m going to continue making pdf files because the program is so fucking basic that there’s no chance of my head exploding. Hooray!

Well, my head cold is seriously getting the better of me, and I probably ought to eat something at some point as well. I think it’s time to grab a shower, grab some food, and cross stitch mindlessly for the next couple hours until I hear back from the grad school about that one minor point. Have fun with the Random Comic Maker and I’ll see you later!

    I like Primo as well:

Yeah, that's what I use for PDFs, and it's generally really good. Except with multi-page tables, that is. But everything else seems to work just fine– plus, it's free.
