Well, I really ought to stop referring to Cthulu as “he.” “He” laid all sorts of little white eggs on the lid of the tank. And I wondered why the snail was spending so much time up there out of the water. So Cthulu’s a girl, but seeing as how she hasn’t been around any other snails for over a year, chances are the eggs are infertile. Female apple snails can store sperm in their bodies for a few months after getting sexed up, but that’s really more like three months, not the fifteen or eighteen I’ve had Cthulu. So, after having cleaned two thirds of the tanks last night, I now have to muck about in one of them yet again to collect the piles of little white eggs accumulated there. Poor little guy; he–she’s never gonna have kids at this rate. The existence of the eggs is rather freaky in another way though: the sheer amount of eggs he…she laid looks to be about a third her size. I know that they weren’t quite that big when she laid them, but still, it was a lot of eggs! I’m pretty impressed with my little dude actually. Er, dudette. This is going to take some effort to remember.
In addition, the two little ones seem to be doing fine. They’re growing pretty well now that they’re in a clean tank with someone to love them. It probably won’t be long before I’m finding eggs clinging to the roof of their tank too. Joy. I’ll have to separate them or something before they hit maturity. They are soooooo cute though. I can’t wait to have them in here on my desk at work so I can watch them grow. Snails are awesome. 🙂 I should put some links on the site about snails. Not right now though. Right now, I have to go to class and listen to student presentations on random topics. Whee!
Since:
Since you love snails so much, we'll have to sit down sometime after Xmas and pick out the snails for my aquarium. Check out Liveaquaria.com for cool snail stuff
