Atheism

Atheism

I’m an Atheist. Yes, I capitalize it just like anyone else would capitalize their religion or nationality or name. It’s a part of who I am and serves just as much to identify me as who I am like the fact that I’m American who speaks French and some German and who likes Chinese and African food. My parents and most of my family are Catholic, the country I live in is Christian, and here I am, a lonely Atheist isolated in the middle of the United States under the thumb of George Dubya and his Fundamentalist followers. This page is a place for me to express myself and seek refuge in the communities of other Atheists. It’s also a place where others can find websites devoted to Atheism so that they might learn something about this minority. I hope to educate above all and to feel safer as a result. The more people know about Atheists and Atheism, perhaps the less they’ll call us Satanists, immoral or terrorists. This is my Atheist page; this is about me.

Atheist Quotes

I collect quotes on all subjects, and I decided to collect my Atheist quotes here since this place made sense for them. Newer ones will go at the top when I find them.

I contend that we are both atheists. I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours.       -Stephen Roberts

Religion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise as false, and by the rulers as useful.       -Seneca the younger 4 BCE-65 CE

Men never commit evil so fully and joyfully as when they do it for religious convictions.       -Blaise Pascal

I still say that a church steeple with a lightning rod on top shows a lack of confidence.       -Doug McLeod

The fact that a believer is happier than a skeptic is no more to the point than the fact that a drunken man is happier than a sober one.       -George Bernard Shaw

Philosophy is questions that may never be answered. Religion is answers that may never be questioned.       -Unknown

Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?       -Epicurus

Don’t pray in my school, and I won’t think in your church.       -Unknown

You can’t convince a believer of anything; for their belief is not based on evidence, it’s based on a deep-seated need to believe.       -Carl Sagan

Blind faith is an ironic gift to return to the Creator of human intelligence.       -Unknown

There was once a time when all people believed in God and the church ruled. This time was called the Dark Ages.       -Richard Lederer (Anguished English)

The church says the earth is flat, but I know that it is round, for I have seen the shadow on the moon, and I have more faith in a shadow than in the church.       -Ferdinand Magellan

I do not think that it is necessary to believe that the same God who has given us our senses, reason, and intelligence wished us to abandon their use, giving us by some other means the information that we could gain through them.       -Galileo Galilei

We must respect the other fellow’s religion, but only in the sense and to the extent that we respect his theory that his wife is beautiful and his children smart.       -H.L. Mencken

A man’s ethical behavior should be based effectually on sympathy, education, and social ties; no religious basis is necessary. Man would indeed be in a poor way if he had to be restrained by fear of punishment and hope of reward after death.       -Albert Einstein

We must question the story logic of having an all-knowing all-powerful God, who creates faulty Humans, and then blames them for his own mistakes.       -Gene Roddenberry

With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.       -Steven Weinberg

But I don’t have to know an answer. I don’t feel frightened by not knowing things, by being lost in the mysterious universe without having any purpose–which is the way it really is, as far as I can tell, possibly. It doesn’t frighten me.       -Richard Feynman

Religion is excellent stuff for keeping common people quiet.       -Napoleon Bonaparte

The invisible and the non-existent look very much alike.       -Delos B. McKown

It ain’t the parts of the Bible that I can’t understand that bother me, it is the parts that I do understand.       -Mark Twain (?)

As people become more intelligent, they care less for preachers and more for teachers.       -Robert G. Ingersoll

Religion has actually convinced people that there’s an invisible man–living in the sky–who watches everything you do, every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a special list of ten things he does not want you to do. And if you do any of these ten things, he has a special place, full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish, where he will send you to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry forever and ever ‘til the end of time! But he loves you.       -George Carlin

Which is it, is man one of God’s blunders or is God one of man’s?       -Friedrich Nietzche

Creation science has not entered the curriculum for a reason so simple and so basic that we often forget to mention it: because it is false, and because good teachers understand exactly why it is false. What could be more destructive of that most fragile yet most precious commodity in our entire intellectual heritage–good teaching–than a bill forcing honorable teachers to sully their sacred trust by granting equal treatment to a doctrine not only known to be false but calculated to undermine any general understanding of science as an enterprise?       -Stephen Jay Gould

You’re basically killing each other to see who’s got the better imaginary friend.       -Richard Jeni

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.       -Carl Sagan

Men rarely (if ever) manage to dream up a God superior to themselves. Most Gods have the manners and morals of a spoiled child.       -Robert A. Heinlein

I have examined all the known superstitions of the world, and I do not find in our particular superstition of Christianity one redeeming feature. They are all alike founded on fables and mythology.       -Thomas Jefferson

We must conduct research and then accept the results. If they don’t stand up to experimentation, Buddha’s own words must be rejected.       -Tenzin Gyatso, 14th Dalai Lama (1988)

Jesus’ last words on the cross, “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” hardly seem like the words of a man who planned it that way. It doesn’t take Sherlock Holmes to figure there is something wrong here.       -Donald Morgan

Religion is unusual among divisible labels in being spectacularly unnecessary. If religious beliefs had any evidence going for them, we might have to respect them in spite of their concomitant unpleasantness. But there is no such evidence. To label people as death-deserving enemies because of disagreements about real world politics is bad enough. To do the same for disagreements about a delusional world inhabited by archangels, demons and imaginary friends is ludicrously tragic.       -Richard Dawkins

So far as I can remember, there is not one word in the Gospels in praise of intelligence.       -Bertrand Russell

Pray to God, but keep rowing to shore.       -Russian Proverb

The beauty of religious mania is that it has the power to explain everything. Once God (or Satan) is accepted as the first cause of everything which happens in the mortal world, nothing is left to chance…logic can be happily tossed out the window.       -Stephen King

Often a non-Christian knows something about the earth, the heavens, and the other parts of the world, about the motions and orbits of the stars and even their sizes and distances…and this knowledge holds with certainty from reason and experience. It is thus offensive and disgraceful for an unbeliever to hear a Christian talk nonsense about such things, claiming that what he is saying is based in Scripture. A few years ago we finally persuaded psychiatrists to remove homosexuality from the list of recognized disorders. Maybe it’s time we started lobbying them to add belief in a God to the list. Belief in an angry, intolerant one anyway. I demand assurances that a given religion will not cause or potentiate mass homicidal psychosis or priestly pedophlia before we let it indoctrinate helpless children and vulnerable adults. Bloodthirsty, authoritarian theology threatens Canada as much as tobacco, obesity and booze put together.
